Oral Fixation Jan 11th: Human Trafficking

Slavery is a dark side of humanity that is difficult for many people to think about. There are as many as 12 million adults and children in forced labor and/or prostitution around the world. About 15,000 of those modern-day slaves end up in the Unites States, and of them, about 25% end up in the Southeast United States.

Human trafficking is when traffickers use force, fraud, or coercion to control victims for the purpose of engaging in commercial sex acts or labor services against his/her will. January is Human Trafficking Awareness Month, and on the next Oral Fixation, we will focus on sex trafficking in North Carolina. Sex trafficking in our area happens in residential brothels, escort services, fake massage parlors, strip clubs, and street prostitution.

Ashley Harkrader PhotoMy guest will be Ashley Harkrader, Director of Programs for All We Want is LOVE, a non-profit based in Charlotte whose mission is to end human trafficking, exploitation and slavery through education and prevention. Ashley is a former event coordinator for NC Stop Human Trafficking who won the title of Mrs. Natural Elite in the 2012 Mrs. North Carolina pageant on her platform of sex trafficking.

Please join us for this important discussion about the realities of sexual exploitation, about the work being done by Ashley and others who are raising awareness, and how you and the Charlotte community can help put an end to human trafficking.

Oral Fixation Dec 14th: Exploring the Exotic Arts

AFV Exotic Arts Burlesque Dancer ImageI co-hosted an all-girls event a few years ago that featured wine, gourmet cupcakes, chair massages, and lovely gifts, but what everyone remembers about that night was our lesson on the “exotic arts”. Not only were we privy to a few sensual performances, we were also schooled in such seemingly simple tasks as how to saunter into a room, maintain eye contact, sway our hips, and the like. It was great fun, and also a little daunting for some participants as it stretched them out of their comfort zones.

That experience has stayed with me and that’s why I invited Annie from AFV Exotic Arts to be on the December 14th show. I know she can provide a broader perspective on pole dancing and burlesque because her approach is about connecting the individual to their exotic self. Dancing isn’t about performing for someone else’s pleasure as much as it is about performing for one’s own pleasure. I look forward to hearing how the exotic arts have expanded her understanding of her sensual self, as well as hearing stories about how her clients were impacted as they learned to embrace their inner diva.

The next show, on December 28th, will be a re-broadcast of an earlier interview with Troy Spry of Xklusive Thoughts. He is a relationship coach and author who shared his take on what men really want in life and in relationships. Coming up in 2016, Oral Fixation will continue to focus on local individuals and organizations that are working to create a sexually healthier and happier community. For example, future shows will tackle the issue of human trafficking, highlight a sexy new web series produced in town, and feature a local couple who will share what marriage really looks like after the honeymoon wears off.

Oral Fixation Nov 16th: The Red Pump Project; Eroticism in Words

Oil On Canvas Painting by Gustav Klimt

Judith I – Oil On Canvas

Break out your favorite red shoes or tie! The Red Pump/Red Tie Affair is happening on December 5, 2015 in uptown Charlotte. This fabulous annual event combines fashion and philanthropy to bring awareness to how HIV and AIDS is affecting women and girls in our community, and it also celebrates local leaders who are making a positive impact. Jameka Whitten from The Red Pump Project will join me at the beginning of the hour to share more about how red pumps are raising awareness.

During the second portion of the show, we are going to explore the quote: “All art is erotic” said by Austrian artist Gustav Klimt, known for his many paintings and murals of the female form. I think he meant that artistic inspiration often arises out of our primal desires, our most human experiences. Or as my kids have asked, “Is every song on the radio pretty much about sex?”

To discuss this further, I have invited local poets Melisa Graham and Bluz to join me in the studio to reflect on how eroticism influences their writing. They will share examples of their work, as well as talk about how the domestic and erotic aspects of life interplay and influence each other.

Oral Fixation Nov 2nd: What Men Want

Teach me How To Love Again eBook CoverAn interview with Troy Spry

Men and women have co-existed for millennia, and yet we still can’t seem to understand one another. I attended an event a few years ago which highlighted this disconnect. It was called “State of the Union” and it was hosted by relationship coach Troy Spry. About 40 singles sat in the back room of Enso at the Epicenter and shared their questions.

Women wanted to know why men became so passive. Men wanted to know how to be chivalrous without being condescending. Women felt there weren’t enough quality available men in the dating pool. Men felt women had unrealistic standards and expectations of them. Troy kept the conversations flowing and did a great job of keeping things positive and framing the frustrations as opportunities to communicate better.

Since that event, Troy has e-published a book called “Teach Me How To Love: A Man’s Journey Toward and Through Marriage”. I am pleased to have Troy join me on the next Oral Fixation show to discuss what he has learned personally about love and marriage, and how he helps others who long for meaningful relationships.
