Charlotte’s culinary industry is on the rise with Chef Alyssa Gorelick at the forefront.

Alyssa grew up in Charlotte and attended the Art Institute of Charlotte. She has worked in and ran some of Charlotte’s most prestigious kitchens. Her culinary skills took her around the world and she has cooked everywhere from fine dining establishments to intimate settings. Chef Alyssa was the opening Executive Chef at Fern, Flavors from the Garden. While there, her passion for healthy and locally sourced cuisine grew.

In 2011, Alyssa met and began dating her now finance, Andrew Wilen. In December 2012, they formed the idea of Chef Alyssa’s Kitchen. Combining her culinary knowledge with his marketing and events experience, Chef Alyssa’s Kitchen now offers classes for every skill level and type of cuisine at Atherton Market, located in the South End.  The classes are designed to bring people together to share their love of food and enhance their cooking skill level. The products used in her classes are locally sourced whenever possible and recipes change with the seasons.

Chef Alyssa said admittedly she misses that rush a chef has from getting through a dinner service but is feeling more fulfilled these days by being able to share her love and knowledge of cooking with her students. If you consider yourself a master chef, don’t miss an episode of Top Chef, or even if you cannot boil an egg, I think you will enjoy my conversation with Chef Alyssa during my live show, Not Your Boyfriend’s Radio Hour, Monday, April 4th from 7:00pm to 9:00pm on Charlotte Community Radio.

Not Your Boyfriend’s Radio Hour Mar 21st: Soprano, Colette Gardner

Dating back to the 16th Century, opera is one of the most time honored and stunning forms of performance art. The advanced skill sets and the dedication it requires to perform opera is in direct correlation to how amazingly stirring and mesmerizing a performance can be. Sadly, in our community, opera is not receiving the attention it deserves.

I did not have a live opera experience until I saw my good friend Colette Gardner perform at the Halton Theatre with Central Piedmont Community College Arts this past year. I had the privilege to see two of her performances with the CPCC Opera Theatre, Pagliacci and Battle of the Composer Verdi vs. Wagner (don’t ask me to pronounce it). To say I was impressed is putting it very lightly and I was slightly ashamed of my lack of knowledge on the art form.

Opera characters, music and staging are complex. In order to perform opera you must have an extremely solid vocal technique as well as an ability to master a foreign language. The training for an opera singer is comparable to a professional athlete. In order to get noticed in a competitive and a highly concentrated realm one must be working on their craft every day and live a stringent lifestyle.

Colette has traveled the globe to perform opera. Her journey has taken her to Germany, Italy, all over the US West Coast, and luckily she has landed back here in Charlotte. Her next performance with the CPCC Opera Theatre is The Old Maid and the Thief paired with The Medium, April 8th-10th at Halton Theatre.

Join me and opera sensation Colette Gardner this Monday, March 21st during my Not Your Boyfriend’s Radio Hour show on Charlotte Community Radio.

Not Your Boyfriend’s Radio Hour Feb 15th: Jenny Sassman-Birdsong Brewery

Photo of Jenny SassmanAccording to The North Carolina Craft Brewers Guild, North Carolina has over 150 breweries and brew pubs, making it the most popular state in the American South for such business.  In recent years, dozens of breweries have popped up around the Charlotte region. It’s exciting to see local entrepreneurs experiencing success in this industry.

With the craft beer industry in North Carolina being on the incline, I wanted to interview one of the people behind one of the most popular breweries in town, Jenny Sassman of Birdsong Brewing Company. Jenny handles all social media for the brewery and manages wholesale accounts. She has been a part of Charlotte’s spirits scene for several years and has really found her home at Birdsong.

Like many Charlotteans, I’ve spent several sunny afternoons at a brewery. This spring I attended the grand opening of the new Birdsong Brewing Company and the place was packed. It was a major event including: food trucks, beer tents, live music, and people just relaxing and drinking great beer.

The company was founded by a group of friends who shared a love of great beer and great people. They quickly outgrew their original location after three years and were forced to expand production and introduce packaging to the Charlotte market.  I had the opportunity to tour the brew house and learn how my beloved Jalapeno Pale Ale is created and canned.

Beer  historically has been dubbed a man’s’ drink, but with the growing popularity, accessibility and diversity of breweries I believe women are now as interested in and enjoying beer as much as men. If you are a beer aficionado, novice, or just want to know what kind of beer goes best with a slice of pizza, I think you will enjoy my chat with Jenny Sassman this Monday, February 15th during my show Not Your boyfriend’s Radio Hour on Charlotte Community Radio.

Not Your Boyfriend’s Radio Hour Feb 1st: Comedian Blayr Nias

Photo of Blayr NiasThere could not be a more fitting person for the inaugural episode of Not Your Boyfriend’s Radio Hour. I am a comedy enthusiast and am impressed by anyone who is able to make a living doing what they are passionate about.

Blayr Nias is a very accomplished comedian who calls Charlotte home. She was honored by Charlotte Magazine as the Best Comedian of 2014. Blayr has shared the stage with countless famous comedians including a performance at the Oddball Comedy Festival that was headlined by Louis CK and Aziz Ansari. She also made a splash on network television in the hit FOX show Laughs. Blayr created and continues to produce The Almost Famous Comedy Show that showcases local comedians monthly at the Comedy Zone.

The career Blayr has chosen requires a lot of self-discipline, perseverance, and confidence. It is an industry that is notorious for being difficult to break into and even tougher to stay in. The comedy world has been under a lot of scrutiny lately. We are in a time where society wants everyone to be “politically correct” and many comedians have experienced backlash when some of their content went too far, according to some. In the past few years, women have been much more visible in the comedy sphere. I cannot go into a grocery store without seeing Tina Fey or Amy Schumer gracing the cover of a magazine. There are still some hold outs though that claim “women aren’t funny”.

Join me and Blayr Nias Monday, February 1st at 7pm on Charlotte Community Radio as she takes us on her personal journey and work within the Charlotte comedy community. She’s a comedian’s comedian who works hard while building others up and I believe that’s why she makes the perfect first guest.
