Well, it’s been fun…

With Charlotte Community Radio going off air this month, the last LIVE edition of JAZZ LIVES!!! with CurtJazz, will air Thursday, May 18th from 6:00pm to 9:00pmEst.

When Bridget asked me last spring if I would be interested in having a program on Charlotte Community Radio (CLTCRadio), it was exciting, a bit scary albeit perfectly timed. I worked in AM-FM radio in New York City through most of the 90’s, ran a web-based jazz radio station from 2004 to 2016, but I had been away from live radio since 2000. So I was somewhat out of practice on May 12, 2016 when I first opened the mic, but my trepidation quickly dissipated and the joy returned.

So I want to say “Thank You”; first, to Bridget B. Sullivan and Melvin Nix, co-founders of CLTCRadio, for the chance to knock some rust off these old pipes and remind me that this is “what I do”.

And a huge thanks to my guests. The incredible, world-class musicians who call the Carolinas home and who took time out of their incredibly busy schedules to spend some time with us: Dawn Anthony; Lovell Bradford; Will Campbell; Nicci Canada; Tenya Coleman; Harvey Cummings; Lonnie Davis; Ocie Davis; Buff Dillard; Mike Hackett; Amos Hoffman, and Tim Scott, Jr.; I am forever in your debt.

My biggest appreciation goes out to all of you who listened and hopefully, enjoyed the music, as I shared my passion for jazz and for the artistry of living musicians. Some of you were friends from long ago that I reunited with. Some are a more recent part of my life. You were all a huge part of rekindling an old dream and I will always be grateful to you for that.

I’m on Twitter and Instagram as @curtjazz, and on Facebook as CurtJazzRadio. My website is curtjazz.com. Let’s keep in touch.

God Bless You and Goodnight.

Tea Time Dec 6th: Artist & Art Educator, Lee Baumgarten

Photo of Lee BaumgartenIf you Google-Search Lee Baumgarten, a timeline will pop-up that reflects pages of articles, which leave a trail of evidence that he has and is always exploring new ways to connect and interact with others through the arts. If we could all view the world through an artist’s eye, what would we see and how would it change us? If you read Lee’s artist statement it may make you want to try. Lee states that, “beauty has a way of spilling out onto a table and etching its way into the heart. It is witnessed in a brief moment of harmonious balance in odds. It can be a notion between what is desired and what is curious. It is at the core of all aesthetics, that which make us human.”

I met Lee at his Pineville gallery in, let’s say, 1999 or 2000, and have been a friend and fan of his work since that time. Born in Charlotte, North Carolina, Lee has lived and produced his works in Ohio, New York, West Virginia, Florida, South Carolina, and North Carolina. His paintings, drawings and sculptures are included in corporate and private collections nationwide and are recently expanding abroad to Europe. Lee is presently creating a collaborative traveling art exhibit entitled “We See Heaven Upside Down” in tandem with “Moving Poets” artist MyLoan Dinh of Berlin, Germany. The work concerns modern day refugees and the journey and experiences of displacement. It is intended to promote dialog on a multi-national level. In coordination to this body of work, he is organizing an educational presentation- seminar/workshop to be offered through art & science institutions, colleges and foundations for art professionals and graduate students who intend to promote their work on a global scale.

I am very honored and excited to chat with Lee Baumgarten because he ALWAYS has a lot to say and offers great commentary on the life of a working artist. Join us December 6th at 6:30pm, as we delve into a “harmonious balance of odds” during Tea Time with Tenya LIVE on Charlotte Community Radio.

JAZZ LIVES!!! Dec 1st: Holiday Jazz – Featuring Trombonist Buff Dillard

Photo of Buff DillardWe will celebrate the Holidays throughout December on JAZZ LIVES!!! with CurtJazz. And we kick off our celebration in fine style on Thursday, December 1st with our special guest, trombonist Buff Dillard, who joins us LIVE from 7:00pm to 8:00pm on Charlotte Community Radio.

Born into a musical family, Buff exhibited an interest in singing, drums and playing brass instruments at an early age. By the age of twelve, the trombone had become his passion and he decided to focus on mastering the slide. As a student of Martin Luther King High School in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, his gift allowed him to attend the Philadelphia All-City Jazz Academy. While there, he performed with the academy’s band, Pieces of a Dream, and the legendary Count Basie Band. He was also able to attend jazz workshops instructed by celebrated jazz trumpeter, Wynton Marsalis.

As a solo artist, Mr. Dillard has released a total of eight independent projects including his latest album Mr. Bonejazz and his Holiday themed EP Christmas Moments. Buff continues his career as a trombonist, performer, independent international recording artist, and CEO of Buff Dillard Music LLC.

During the show, we will talk about his music, his influences, his current projects, and we’ll play a few tracks from Christmas Moments that will help to get us all in the mood for the Holiday Season so join Buff Dillard and me as we prove that there’s nothing better than “Bone for the Holidays”.

JAZZ LIVES!!! Nov 17th: Joe Henderson Tribute – Featuring Dave Finucane

joe-henderson-_-jazzlives300On this week’s LIVE edition of JAZZ LIVES!!! with CurtJazz on Charlotte Community Radio, we will honor the music of a tenor saxophone giant, Joe Henderson. Our broadcast tribute will air one day before a live tribute to Mr. Henderson’s music in The Jazz Room, on November 18th and November 19th. Durham, North Carolina based saxophonist/educator Dave Finucane will be the headliner.

Mr. Henderson first came to prominence in the jazz world in 1963, with the release of his debut album, Page One. The album featured two compositions that would become jazz standards: “Recorda Me” and “Blue Bossa”. The next three years would see Henderson release four more albums on Blue Note that also became jazz classics. It was the revival of Blue Note in the mid 80’s that spurred renewed interest in Joe Henderson; as he recorded an acclaimed live trio set at the Village Vanguard. Verve Records signed Henderson in 1992 and promoted him heavily in a series of “songbook” projects, which were critically and commercially successful, re-establishing Joe Henderson as one of the premiere saxophonists in jazz, a place he occupied until his death in 2001.

Dave Finucane is co-founder and director of the Durham Jazz Workshop. He graduated from the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston, and since he has been teaching in New York and the NC Triangle region. Dave is currently on faculty at Duke University and UNC Chapel Hill, teaching jazz improvisation and jazz saxophone. He performs extensively in the Triangle and has either led or been a sideman on 12 recordings.

Be sure to join me on JAZZ LIVES!!! with CurtJazz, as we honor the musical legacy of Joe Henderson and play tracks from Dave Finucane’s album Valerie’s Song; Thursday, November 17th from 6:00pm to 9:00pm (EDT).
