Simply aPauling Feb 6th: Paul & Robyn Pallotta

Tune into Charlotte Community Radio Monday, February 6th, from 9:00pm to 10:00pm for another LIVE broadcast of Simply aPauling with in-studio guests Paul and Robyn Pallotta.

Photo of Paul and Robyn PallottaSo for those of you that don’t know, February 6th will be the last episode of Simply aPauling, as I am moving to New York City the following week. So I thought what better way to end it then to have the people who started it all on my show, my parents Paul and Robyn Pallotta.

I can’t tell you much about their lives before May 28th, 1989, because to me that’s when their life officially started. I do know that they were each born in 1964 in New York, they went to the same high school, and then they got married. They then had their first child in 1986, and after realizing they could do better, they had me three years later. Five years and one more child later, they decided to pick up everything they owned, which wasn’t much, and move to North Carolina. I still don’t know the reason why they decided to leave everyone and everything they’ve ever known, but I like to think we have a New York mafia background and it was the Witness Protection Program that forced their move. They would go on spending the next 20 years working hard just so they could raise a family they hate.

I am super afraid to have my parents on as my guests. When I told them they were gonna be my guests, they both said, “I’ve got to think of some good childhood stories”. I am just grateful that you can’t see baby photos over the radio. So tune in LIVE as I sit and listen to embarrassing stories of myself, it’s gonna be fun.

Better known as E.B., she is an acclaimed comedic character actor, co-founder of the Queen City Comedy Festival and founder and director of the Acting Out Studio Improv Program.

E.B. hails from the original Queen City: Cincinnati, which is where she began her journey in performance as a competitive gymnast. However; when the leotards just didn’t fit quite right, she decided to give performing a shot.

She began her education at Northern Kentucky University with a BFA in Acting and performed as a company player of This Side Up Improv Tour Troupe. She then went to Chicago to train and perform at iO! (Improv Olympic), jetted off to Savannah, Georgia to finish her education with an MFA in Performing Arts-Acting at the Savannah College of Art and Design (S.C.A.D.). Now, she’s made her way back up the coast to Charlotte where she performs with Now Are The Foxes and Mom’s Adhesive.

In 2009, after a mid-life crisis and search for sanity, former child actress Karla Dingle (aka odingle) googled Charlotte Comedy Theater and began taking classes.

When asked what she does when not on stage, she quickly said: ” I sell American dolls. I’m not a domestic goddess. I’m obsessed with my dog, my Mini Cooper, my brown boys, TV, Ireland & exclamations!!!!!”

A University of Georgia Theater Alum, Karla can be seen around the Carolinas performing with Now are the Foxes, Charlotte Comedy Theater, Off the Cuff Comedy, and Improv Vikings.

I am excited to talk to E.B. and Karla about Improv and The Queen City Comedy Festival, scheduled for January 27th through 29th. So make sure to listen LIVE cause it’s gonna be good.

The Queen City Comedy Festival – Jan 27th Thru 29th

Come out and be a part of the Very First Queen City Comedy Festival!

Logo for The Queen City Comedy Festival

What is the Queen City Comedy Festival? It is exactly what it sounds like, a 3 day festival for some of the local comedic talent of Charlotte to showcase their skills. Whether you prefer improv, sketch, or stand-up it will all be featured at this festival. This event is hosted by Queen City Comedy, a non-profit organization hell-bent on making Charlotte the funniest city in America and Acting Out Studio, a cutting edge acting studio in Charlotte, North Carolina, established by Los Angeles actress Kamber Hejlik in 2009.

Where is the Queen City Comedy Festival being held? The whole festival takes place at Acting Out Studios, located at 8145 Ardrey Kell Rd, Charlotte, North Carolina 28277. Ticketing information can be found here: Queen City Comedy.

When is the Queen City Comedy Festival? January 27th-29th.

I bet most of you didn’t even know that Charlotte had a comedy scene, let alone one large enough to host its own festival. With over 25 confirmed acts, we’re out to prove you wrong. With a stage both upstairs and downstairs, there will be two shows going on at once both Friday and Saturday night. That’s a lot of comedy.

Already confirmed to perform are some of Charlotte’s longest running comedy troupes like Charlotte Comedy Theater, Now Are The Foxes, Improv Charlotte, and Robot Johnson. That’s not even including some of Charlotte’s funniest stand-up comedians who will also perform that weekend. Psssst! I’m one of them. Seriously, when will you ever get to see this much comedy under one roof? NEVER! So make it a point to attend this festival.

Has anyone ever told you you were funny? Do you think you have what it takes to be a comedian? The Queen City Comedy Festival is a great place to start. There will be workshops both Saturday and Sunday during the day and these workshops are taught by some of Charlotte’s best instructors. You’ll have your pick of Improv for Kids, Improv 101, Sketch Writing, Musical Improv, and more once you sign up.

This will be a ground breaking weekend for the Charlotte Comedy Scene and Charlotte Community Radio is proud to be a media partner of this festival. Look for a few of our show hosts who will be there volunteering and/or mcing one of the shows.

Simply aPauling Jan 9th: Robot Johnson-Candice Cortinas & Brandon Ballard

Photo of Robot JohnsonTune into Charlotte Community Radio Monday, December 12th from 9:00pm to 10:00pm for another LIVE broadcast of Simply aPauling with in-studio guests Candice Cortinas and Brandon Ballard, two original members of Charlotte’s longest running sketch comedy group Robot Johnson.

Robot Johnson is made up of an eclectic mix of actors, writers, stand ups, improv, and sketch comedy veterans. That mix allows them to create original content shows that will have a little something for everyone and a lot of something for sketch fans. The group formed in late 2008. Since then, they’ve written and produced well over a hundred original-content sketch comedy shows.

Robot Johnson has, over the years, won a number of accolades, boons, pittances, and windfalls such as a Metrolina Theatre Award in 2009, Charlotte Magazine’s Best Sketch Comedy Group in 2010 & 2013, Funniest Twitter account in 2013, Funniest Instagram in 2014. In addition to delighting comedy fans in Charlotte, Robot Johnson performs in comedy festivals across the Southeast including the Charleston Comedy Festival, NC Comedy Arts Festival, The New South Comedy Festival, and Asheville’s SketchFest.

I am really excited to have Candice and Brandon on the show this week. Up until this point, all my shows have been with either stand up comedians or improvisers, so it will be a lot of fun talking to them and looking at comedy through a different perspective. Being the longest running sketch comedy group in Charlotte, I am also interested in hearing what they have to say about the growth of comedy in Charlotte in the past 5-10 years, and where they think Charlotte can be in the next 5-10 years. Make sure to tune in Monday night for this plus much more.
