It’s time to get back to artist interviews during my Charlotte Community Radio, Voices From The Community show so join me on Thursday, September 1st when saxophonist and flutist John Alexander is my in-studio guest.
When’s the last time you saw a musician playing two instruments at one time? Well, John Alexander, a jazz composer and performer who performed at the at Double Door Inn, and now appears regularly at Blue Restaurant and Bar, and other public and private venues in Charlotte and the surrounding area, does exactly that. Not only is he a member of, and contributing composer and arranger to the Charlotte Jazz Orchestra, he is the President of the Charlotte Jazz Society.
Mr. Alexander is the recipient of several grants from Charlotte’s Arts and Sciences Council including two Regional Artist Grants. Through the Charlotte Jazz Society he organized and manages “Jazz Goes to School”, a grant supported program that places professional jazz musicians in the classrooms of several middle and high school jazz bands in the Charlotte Mecklenburg school system. Also through the Society he helps to organize and produce the “Charlotte Jazz Society’s Student Jazz Festival: Where the Cool Kids Come to Play” in the spring of every year.
With the closing of the Double Door Inn, I’ll definitely have him take us down memory lane so be sure to listen.
Voices From The Community, hosted by Bridget B., airs Monday through Friday from 2pm to 5pm via CharlotteCommunityRadio.org or CLTCRadio.org. Feel free to ask a question of our hosts and/or guests while you listen via Mixlr.com/CLTCRadio.
