On this week’s edition of JAZZ LIVES!!!, I am honored to welcome the internationally recognized drummer, arranger, educator, and the artistic director of The Jazz Arts Initiative (JAI), Mr. Ocie Davis as my in-studio guest.
In his JAI role, Ocie is the artistic heartbeat of the organization. In just three years, he has demonstrated the vision and creativity necessary to turn JAI’s The Jazz Room into the best jazz concert series in Charlotte and one of the most admired jazz sets in the Southeast. Ocie’s tireless work as an educator with the organization’s Jazz Academy has been instrumental in the development of the two most recent Loonis McGlohon Young Jazz Artist Award winners; pianist Sean Mason and saxophonist Veronica Leahy.
A Los Angeles native, Ocie studied music at the University of New Orleans under the direction of Ellis Marsalis. He has performed with some of the most influential figures in jazz including Ellis Marsalis, Delfeayo Marsalis, Terence Blanchard, Christian Scott, Nicolas Payton, and Donald Harrison. Harrison has called him “one of the premiere drummers in jazz.” Ocie has also had the distinction of being recognized as a Jazz All-Star by New Orleans Magazine. His Charlotte-based group, The Ocie Davis Trio, was voted “Best Jazz Trio” by Charlotte Magazine in 2011. He and his wife Lonnie have been Charlotte residents since 2006.
JAZZ LIVES!!! airs LIVE on Charlotte Community Radio every Thursday from 6:00pm to 9:00pm, and on August 11th, Ocie will join me during the 7:00pm hour of the show to discuss his musical influences, upcoming performances in The Jazz Room and to spin some of his favorite jazz tracks.
