I am very excited to have vocalist Dawn Anthony, as my special in-studio guest on JAZZ LIVES!!! Thursday, July 28th. The show airs LIVE from 6:00pm to 9:00pm on Charlotte Community Radio.
There are many people working today who refer to themselves as “jazz singers” but in my opinion, there are few jazz “vocalists”, that is, a craftsperson, who doesn’t just sing a lyric but who studies a song and infuses their performances with their own unique perspectives. Dawn Anthony is a vocalist.
Born in Philadelphia and raised in Atlanta, Ms. Anthony has been a Charlotte resident since 1989. She received a BFA in music from Queens University and her diverse musical background ranges from jazz to gospel to classical to Broadway and beyond.
As the MC of the Jazz Arts Initiative’s JAZZ ROOM series, I am a big fan of Dawn’s work from her numerous appearances with us. She sang with pianist Lovell Bradford during his Chick Corea tribute, performed songs of the season during our annual Christmas shows and stole the show when she performed alongside Delfeayo Marsalis during his Duke Ellington tribute. The pinnacle for me; however, has been Dawn’s two performances in which she headlined tributes to Ella Fitzgerald, performances that were nothing less than transformative.
JAZZ LIVES!!!, on Thursday, July 28th, will honor some of the great vocalists of jazz; from the well-known to the obscure, by playing some of their best tracks. Dawn Anthony will join us at 7 pm to share her perspective on jazz singing and the artists and performances who have influenced her during her career. It will be an unforgettable evening of live radio that should not be missed.
JAZZ LIVES!!! with CurtJazz, airing LIVE every Thursday from 6:00pm to 9:00pm via CharlotteCommunityRadio, CLTCRadio.org, OR use the Mixlr app where you can listen and chat with our hosts and guests alike.
