On this Thursday’s edition of JAZZ LIVES!!! with CurtJazz, we will celebrate the music of the living women of jazz – instrumentalists as well as vocalists. And during the 7:00pm hour of the show, we are happy to be joined by one of the premier jazz vocalists in the Queen City, Ms. Tenya Colemon.

Born in Mississippi, Tenya began singing at the tender age of four. After years of performing at churches and area festivals, Ms. Colemon and her family sought professional training in an effort to further develop her vocal instrument.

Tenya continued her music and vocal studies throughout her primary education as well as through her undergraduate studies in Mississippi (Mississippi University for Women) and her graduate studies in Atlanta (Clark-Atlanta University). Tenya studied with several vocal coaches, including legendary jazz vocalist, Sheila Jordan, Dena DeRose and Madeline Eastman.

Ms. Colemon leads her own jazz ensemble that performs as a duo, trio or quartet. She opened for national headliners such as jazz saxophonist, Donald Harrison and she graced the stage with acclaimed jazz pianist, Cyrus Chestnut.

In April, Tenya Colemon was the closing performer at the outdoor session of the 2016 Charlotte Jazz Festival. And last month, friends of Charlotte Community Radio enjoyed a splendid set by Tenya and guitarist, Brad Bailey at CLTCRadio’s first fundraiser.

Tenya and I will discuss her musical influences and play music by some of her favorite living female artists. Tune in for a delightful hour of jazz and conversation on Thursday, June 30th.
