There is much to adore about Charlotte writer and humorist Joanne Spataro. Her involvement with local media began at the age of 13 when she reviewed movies for The Charlotte Observer. She has gone on to cover the 2012 Democratic National Convention and write for publications like The Huffington Post and The Advocate.
But Joanne is no stuffy columnist or boring political observer. Her approach is almost child-like, infusing her interviews with silliness and play. Her Pillow Talk Show web series was set in her pink frilly bed, where she not only interviewed me, but Broadway star Jonathan Hadley and then future mayor Jennifer Roberts. She interviewed Republican mayoral candidate Edwin Peacock while he taught her how to skateboard. And then there was her spoof of ex-Mayor Patrick Cannon’s HERS feminine hygiene product he used as a cover for accepting bribes. Hilarious! This woman is a gem.
Last year, local arts and entertainment publication Creative Loafing named Joanne one of “15 People To Watch in 2015”, as well as naming her and her girlfriend the “2015 Pride Power Couple.” Not one to lounge around in her onesie for too long, Joanne just debuted a new series which spoofs North Carolina Governor Pat McCrory. And I haven’t even mentioned her daily social media updates during her “365 Days as a Human Woman”.
Please join me and Joanne for some amusing “pillow talk” as we discuss what makes Charlotteans laugh, who serves the best nachos in town, and how she is using her media savvy to speak about the people and the issues she cares about most.
