Slavery is a dark side of humanity that is difficult for many people to think about. There are as many as 12 million adults and children in forced labor and/or prostitution around the world. About 15,000 of those modern-day slaves end up in the Unites States, and of them, about 25% end up in the Southeast United States.
Human trafficking is when traffickers use force, fraud, or coercion to control victims for the purpose of engaging in commercial sex acts or labor services against his/her will. January is Human Trafficking Awareness Month, and on the next Oral Fixation, we will focus on sex trafficking in North Carolina. Sex trafficking in our area happens in residential brothels, escort services, fake massage parlors, strip clubs, and street prostitution.
My guest will be Ashley Harkrader, Director of Programs for All We Want is LOVE, a non-profit based in Charlotte whose mission is to end human trafficking, exploitation and slavery through education and prevention. Ashley is a former event coordinator for NC Stop Human Trafficking who won the title of Mrs. Natural Elite in the 2012 Mrs. North Carolina pageant on her platform of sex trafficking.
Please join us for this important discussion about the realities of sexual exploitation, about the work being done by Ashley and others who are raising awareness, and how you and the Charlotte community can help put an end to human trafficking.
Oral Fixation with sexologist Becky Knight airs every other Monday from 9:00pm to 10:00pm on CharlotteCommunityRadio.org, CLTCRadio.org. You can also listen via Mixlr.com/CLTCRadio where you can chat with hosts and guests as well. We enjoy hearing from you!
